Translink Letter Template

June, 2009

Dear supporters of TripEd,

This October, 21 Metro Vancouver Mayors will vote on the Translink 2040 Plan. We are urging them to include the TripEd Group Transit Pass as part of the plan. We have received wide endorsement from the community including The B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, Teachers and School Trustees Associations, School and Library Boards, B.C. Field Trips, Vancouver City Council and many more. Please check our website for a more comprehensive list.

Please use the following template letter as is, add your own thoughts to the letter or create your own. Send it to Translink and cc your Mayor and City Council members, school board chair, library board chair, MLA,  Ministers of  Education, Transportation, and Environment, employer, union, environmental, and other associations you belong to and ask your friends and family members to do the same. This must be done ASAP, as decisions will be made in August.  Contacts for Mayors, MLA’s and Ministries follow the cut and paste letter below.

I (we) strongly support a low cost group transit pass (TripEd) for youth (K-12) on field trips and urge governments, officials, and authorities to require its inclusion and implementation in the finalized Translink Plan (Fall 2009).

Such a pass accords with regional transportation objectives as set out in Transport 2040 Strategic Goals including: 1) reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions;  2) safe, secure and accessible travel for everyone; 3) optimization of the region’s transportation assets.

It also facilitates numerous educational objectives. High transit costs result in fewer field trips to museums, festivals, libraries, community recreational facilities, musical and dramatic performances, parks, and science centres. Removing this barrier will ensure equal access to these educationally enriching resources, and that transit fares will cause no child to be left behind.

Additionally, there are substantial community benefits. Our children are introduced to transit as a viable and preferred mode of transportation to the region’s many cultural and educational resources. This will influence their future transportation choices. The amenities themselves benefit from increased user volume and participation, not only through the field trip itself, but also through increased patronage and repeated use.

For these environmental, educational and economic reasons, we urge you to support the low cost transit pass for schools, daycares and other educational organizations.
